On December 27th we drove to the south end of the Big Island. We first stopped at a house that we rented near a little town called Naalehu. After dropping off our bags and getting settled at the house, we drove to the Volcano National Park which was an hour away. We hiked the devastation trail. We also visited the Thurston lave tube. By then, we were starving and so we went to the village of Volcano and had supper at a Thai restaurent.

Just before it got dark out, we made our way back to the Volcano Park and parked at the Jagger Museum. From there, we were able to get a good view of the lava glow coming from the edge of the Halemaumau Crater. Craig is a very skilled photographer. He set up his camera on a tripod and used a very slow shutter speed. He also had someone point a light on our faces for 3 seconds while taking the photo so that we would be illuminated in the shot. I would have never been able to take night time shots like this without Craig's expertise. Thanks Craig.
